Professional Volleyball Player
Alaina Bergsma is a former Miss Oregon USA (2012) who plays volleyball for the women’s national Team USA. Originally from Arizona, Alaina has played professionally in Brazil, Puerto Rico, Thailand, China, Philippines and Indonesia.
An athlete since childhood, she participated in track-and-field in high school and was an all-star basketball player and a four-year volleyball letterman. She was also elected as the student body vice-president.
Alaina studied sports marketing and economics at the University of Oregon and was captain of the school’s Ducks Volleyball Team, leading them to the NCAA playoffs in 2011. In 2012 she was selected AVCA First-Team All-American and Capital One Third-Team Academic All-America. She ranked fifth nationally and first in Pac-12 in kills (4.85 per set) and points (5.35 per set). In 2014 she was selected as the Philippine Superliga Grand Prix Finals Most Valuable Player.
She has fulfilled many hours of community service for organizations such as the Oregon Children’s Miracle Network and Oregon Medical Group, plus speaking engagements and coaching open gym volleyball at a local high school. Struggling in the past with accepting her height (6’3”), Alaina has recognized the importance of maintaining a high self-image and continues to reach out to others—particularly students—to inspire them to do the same.
